50 million Android Phones vulnerable to Heartbleed , Data shows
Atleast four million android phones from U.S and tens of millions of android phones from world wide are vulnerable to the security flaw named "Heartbleed" which is now over-populated.
According to Google's announcement, Every device which is running android "Jelly Bean" software which means Android 4.1.1 released in 2012 is vulnerable.
Using data provided by the firm Chitika , It is the first time when an accurate estimate has been done on vulnerable devices. The android devices which are running Android 4.1 or 4.2 are not at risk.
Google has not provided the number of vulnerable android devices but they have indicated that the figure is less than 10% of world wide activated devices. It could be huge number as Google have activated about 900 million devices running with Google services world wide, and there are hundreds of devices in China without Google services which is not shown in Google's system , that devices in China might be running vulnerable version.
"More than 80% of the people running Android 4.1 which have shared its data without looking are all affected," Marc Rogers, principal security researcher at the San Francisco-based company told.
Google released the first version of Android 4.1.1 in July 2012 which brought a bug fix for Nexus 7 tablets.
Only the version 4.1.1 uses the vulnerable version of OpenSSL as Google noticed it on a blog which was discussing the bugs affecting on Google products.

25 Million 'NAVER' Accounts Breached using Stolen Data

A 31-year-old South Korean has been recently accused by the police for the allegation of infiltrating and hacking the accounts of 25 million users of Naver, one of the popular search portal in South Korea. On Wednesday, the Asian National Police Agency revealed that the suspect purchased the private information of 25 million users, including names, residential numbers, Internet IDs and passwords from a Korean-Chinese, back in August last year, Korea Herald reported. The suspect surnamed 'Seo', supposedly used the purchased information to hack into the accounts of Naver users and sent out spam messages and other ‘illicit emails’ to the account holders. He had made an illegal profit of some 160 million won ($148,000) using this, according to the report. Also a hacker surnamed 'Hong', has been arrested by the police who was suspected to develop the hacking program that automatically enter users’ IDs and passwords, which was apparently used by 'Seo' to sign-in to the Naver users' accounts. The police have charged three accomplices of Seo without detention and enhancing their investigation to 86 others who are suspected to buy the computer programs made by Hong.
On this issue, a Naver official stressed that Naver was not at fault regarding the incident, rather the personal information of the users are ready to purchase from the black market of the Korea. So, the data are not abused by the internal sources, rather it is very easy for the people having a hand on users’ sensitive information. He added “the best preventive measure for now would be for users to change their passwords on a regular basis so that even if someone should access their accounts the impact would be minimal.”Also In 2012, two South Korean hackers were arrested for data from 8.7 million customers in the nation's second-biggest mobile operator.
18 Million E-mail Account Passwords Stolen in Germany

German newspaper The Local quotes German authorities saying that they are investigating a major mass theft of 18 million email passwords that had affected all the ISPs in Germany.
Prosecutors tell that they are determining how these passwords were stolen. The prosecutor told media that compromised email accounts are being used online for making online purchases.
Also the other online accounts, whose users had put same passwords as that of their email's, have been hacked.
According to Der Spiegel, at least 3 million of the stolen accounts belonged to German citizens.
This is the second major breach of e-mail account information in Germany this year -- in January, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security announced that 16 million stolen e-mail addresses and passwords had been found during an analysis of botnets.

Worst Data Breach in German History, 18 Million Email Passwords Compromised

Germany has confirmed its biggest Data theft in the country's history with usernames and passwords of some 18 million email accounts stolen and compromised by hackers. The Story broke by the German press, Der Spiegel on Thursday, when German Authorities revealed another mass hacking of private data belonged to German citizens and major Internet companies both in Germany and abroad.Authorities in the northwestern city of Verden unearthed a treasure of personal information, a list of about 18 million stolen email addresses and passwords, and seized it just after only two months from the previous major data breach, when researchers came across 16 million compromised email accounts of German users while conducting research on a botnet, a network of computers infected with malware. The accounts were compromised by hackers in the mid of January, and Der Spiegel suggests that the same group of hackers is responsible for both thefts and that they may be based in one of the Baltic countries.MILLION ON SPAM .. SHOP... THEFTAccording to Investigators, some of the accounts are used to send spam emails and some combinations of email and password are used for online shopping portals, as these mass of stolen personal information could also be used to obtain the financial details of users account. To help in securing the Internet users, German authorities warned to take additional security measures to prevent cyber criminals using their data while shopping online."It is suspected that these stolen records are being actively misused," said Lutz Gaebel, spokesman of the prosecutor's office in Verden.
SOURCE OF DATA
Till now, It has not been revealed by the investigators that how much they know about this massive data Breach and How the attackers get their evil hands on the personal data of over 18 million users. Lutz Gaebel declined to give more information due to the ongoing investigation. It is estimated that at least three million of the accounts belonged to German citizens and some of the compromised email accounts have international domain extensions such as ‘.COM’. But in real, the number could be much larger than the visible one as the investigation is ongoing. The German prosecutor investigating the latest major data theft informed the country's IT watchdog, Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), to introduce additional security measures to help the Internet users.Vulnerability in World's Largest Site Turned Million of Visitors into DDoS Zombies

An application layer or 'layer 7' distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks is one of the most complicated web attack that disguised to look like legitimate traffic but targets specific areas of a website, making it even more difficult to detect and mitigate.Just Yesterday Cloud-based security service provider 'Incapsula' detected a unique application layer DDoS attack, carried out using traffic hijacking techniques. DDoS attack flooded one of their client with over 20 million GET requests, originating from browsers of over 22,000 Internet users. What makes this case especially interesting is the fact that the attack was enabled by persistent XSS vulnerability in one of the world’s largest and most popular site - one of the domains on Alexa’s “Top 50” list.XSS vulnerability to Large-Scale DDoS AttackIncapsula has not disclosed the name of vulnerable website for security reasons, but mentioned it as a high profile video content provider website, allows its users to sign-up and sign-in with their own profiles.
The DDoS attack was enabled by a Persistent XSS (Cross site scripting) vulnerability that allowed the attacker to inject a malicious JavaScript code into the tag associated with the profile image.

So, as each time a legitimate visitor arrived to any webpage on the vulnerable domain (e.g. pages where attacker has commented from his profile), attacker's profile image will also load into the visitor's browser and it would automatically execute the injected JavaScript which in turn injects a hidden iframe with the address of the DDoSers C&C domain.According to Incapsula, attackers are using a Ajax-script based DDoS tool, that force browser to issue a DDoS request at the rate of one request per second."Obviously one request per second is not a lot. However, when dealing with video content of 10, 20 and 30 minutes in length and with thousands of views every minute, the attack can quickly become very large and extremely dangerous." researchers explained.

So to make it a large scale DDoS attack, attacker strategically posted comments on the popular video pages, effectively created a self-sustaining botnet comprising tens of thousands of hijacked browsers, operated by unsuspecting human visitors who were only there to watch a few funny cat videos. The attack was blocked by Incapsula’s progressive challenges and behaviour-based security algorithms, made that much more effective by the predictable behaviour of the DDoS tool. "By intercepting the malicious requests, we were also able to trace back the attack’s source. We did this by replacing the content of the target URL with a snippet of our own JavaScript, which reported the original referral source – leading us to the abused video website. " they said,Researchers also mentioned that attackers behind recent DDoS attack have upgraded their DDoS tool to a much more robust version. "This leads us to believe that what we saw yesterday was a sort of POC test run. " Incapsula quickly reached out to the vulnerable video website support team to patch the flaw.
Vulnerable Texas Transportation Site 'TxTag' leaves 1.2 Million Credit Cards at Risk

Do you know, Why another major company is getting hacked every week? Because of poor policies, Laziness to Incident Response and lack in will-power to put efforts on applying important patches.
Some companies are not taking their security more seriously, and best suitable example for this is TxTag, an electronic toll collection systems in Texas operated by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
1.2 MILLION CREDIT CARD ARE AT RISK
Security researcher, David Longenecker claimed a serious flaw at TxTag website that exposes the active Credit Card Details and Personal Information of 1.2 Million Drivers including active TxTags (vehicle stickers with microchips, which are scanned by electronic readers on toll roads), Names, phone numbers, full residence addresses, email addresses, along with their complete Credit card numbers and Expiration date.
According to David, the account names could be easily predictable by anyone, which is typically an 8-digit number that begins with the number 2 and protected by only a 4-digit PIN Number, that could be itself another easy x-factor to abuse.
But their stupidity didn’t end here, to make the case worst for their users; TxTag.org inexplicably stores the entire credit card details including Credit Card Numbers and expiration date, which meant to be partial visible to users, but available in the plaintext as the value of input field on the page source code.

"I have no indication credit cards have actually been stolen. I merely found and reported a flaw that could very easily be exploited to obtain this information." he said.
NO LESSONS LEARNED FROM PREVIOUS CYBER ATTACKTexas Department of Transportation had not learned any lesson from their past experiences with hackers. Exactly two years back, they themselves confirmed a "cyber attack" in which the hackers overloaded the TxTag back office accounts servers, but according to TxTag, no accounts were compromised at the time.In the reply back in 2012, Karen Amacker, TxDOT spokesman said, "Customer service and information security are of paramount importance to TxDOT. Cyberattackers recently tried to get into TxTag.org, but were not successful. All of our customers' information, including credit card information, remains secure."But this security and so called paramount importance is seems to be a dilemma for them as they did nothing to improve the data security of their users after facing an attack.
FLAW REPORTED, BUT YET NO RESPONSEThe Flaw has been reported by the researcher, but neither TxTag nor TxDOT have so far responded to any of his request for comment.
"The problem lies in the AutoPay Method screen. If you do not have a credit card or bank account stored for automatic payments, then financial data cannot be stolen through this manner." david said.
We should understand that no one is safe when bad hackers are out to do some damage. You are always advised to don't be lazy with your passwords, set tough-to-guess and long passwords and don't store information online that you don’t absolutely need to. Stay Tuned, Stay Safe.
Germany's biggest data theft, 18 million emails and passwords stolen
18 Million email addresses and passwords have been stolen in what is being called the biggest data theft in Germany's history.
The compromised accounts are reportedly being misused for criminal purposes such as spreading spam emails.
The authorities have determined that at least three million of compromised accounts belong to German citizens(accounts ending with '.de'). The rest had international domain extensions such as '.com'.
It is still unknown exactly how many German and people from other countries have been affected by this massive data theft.
A spokesperson for the states prosecutor's office in Verden, Lower Saxony, Germany, told The Local that they are currently in the process of determining how hackers accessed 18 million accounts.
It is second major data theft in Germany this year. In January, German authorities announced that hackers accessed 16 million email addresses and passwords.
Two Hackers Plead Guilty in $15 Million Cybercrime Operation

Two American hackers have admitted to have stolen some $15 million, before a New Jersey court, authorities say. Robert Dubuc, 40, of Malden, Massachusetts, and Oleg Pidtergerya, 49, of Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to commit access device fraud and identity theft before U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan in Trenton federal court.
U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in a statement said that both the men had been involved in a campaign to "cash out" bank accounts and pre-paid debit cards opened in the names of others.
He said The hackers tapped into accounts in 2012 and 2013 at global financial businesses and institutions - Citibank N.A., JP Morgan Chase Bank N.A., PayPal, TD Ameritrade, the U.S. Department of Defense, TIAA-CREF and others - and diverted money to accounts and debit cards they controlled, Fishman said. They then employed "cash out" operations, using people who would withdraw the stolen funds at ATMs and with fraudulent purchases in New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Georgia and elsewhere.
Wire fraud conspiracy carries a potential sentence of 20 years in prison, while the other two charges each carry the possibility of five years in prison, as well as heavy fines.
Sentencing was scheduled for July 7 for Pidtergerya and July 8 for Dubuc. The investigation was carried out by US Federal Agencies.

Ukrainian Hacker falsely claimed theft of 800 million Credit Card

800 Million US based Credit and Debit cards compromised! Really it’s a big number and till now it has not been sized by the cyber security officials but a hacker group claims that they had stolen data on hundreds of millions of U.S. card accounts.Last week, the hacker group called itself Anonymous Ukraine (Op_Ukraine), said it has seized information pertained to 800 million U.S. credit and debit card accounts, including the cards’ data belong to U.S. President Obama and other political figures. The group says the intention behind this data theft is to harm the U.S. economy. The messages posted on March 24 shows clearly that they were by anti-American. The first message read, "After the USA showed its true face when she unilaterally decides which of the peoples to live independently and who under the yoke of the Federal Reserve, we decided to show the world who is behind the future collapse of the American banking system. We own all the financial information of the Fed. And even more than you think."The post was linked with four text files including the data sets of seven million card account that were from all the four card brands, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. On this, the four card companies didn’t comment until now, AmericanBanker.com reported. On March 26, Anonymous Ukraine tweeted that it had released account details for five million more credit cards, and the very next day, it posted the details of 20 million more card accounts. Investigators working for Battelle counted a total of 10.2 million card accounts details in these batches."I would continue watching posts from the group, and checking their data dumps for validity," says Ernest Hampson, technical director for Battelle's cyber intelligence and counterintelligence group."It's really important to keep an eye on your enemy, find out what they're interested in, what their motivation is, what their capabilities are. You have to have somebody out there watching the adversarial groups, watching inside these forums where they gather, and discuss and trade research back and forth, and discover where they're going next before they get there."The financial data breach has been investigated by two companies, the security provider Risk Based Security and the world’s largest nonprofit research and development organization, Battelle. The companies reported that the records produced as evidence of the breach by the group are incomplete, out of date or are fraudulent.
The investigators were also unable to verify the 800 million accounts that the group claimed to have compromised, including those of the VIPs and political figures.Till now, the data threat doesn't appear to be as serious as the Target breach that occurred during the last Christmas holidays in which hackers were successfully able to obtain 40 million valid current credit cards’ details. But, yet the claims and any further releases of information by the hacker group is need to be revised and investigated, because these kind of claims serve as a reminder for the financial firms of the constant vigilance and collaboration.

Pro-Russian behind 800 million cradit cards dumps. Sources claim
Recently, self proclaimed Ukrainian hackers; Anonymous Ukraine, have been claiming to have stolen 800 millions cradit and debit cards. Details of about 700 million of which were uploaded on file sharing sites and linked to archives of the data from two Pastebin posts.
These archives, 300MB in size, contained a mix of account details and magnetic-strip information for MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express cards, it was claimed. There's been some speculation that the data was sourced in part from hacked sales tills in Target stores across the US – some senior politicians blame hackers from Ukraine for infiltrating the retail chain's computers to swipe 40 million or so cards.
However, IT security company Digital Shadows which has been tracking the authenticity of the claimed believes that it is actually Russian hackers who are behind these these stunts. DG suggest that originally the claim about stolen cards was tweeted from a different account than those of the official twitter and facebook accounts associated with Anonymous Ukraine.
The Twitter account in question was created just two days before it tweeted the claim. DG further told that Anonymous Ukraine has always been very eager to announce their achievement from their official Twitter and facebook accounts. Therefore, it is quite unusual and unbelievable that they could announce such an huge 'achievement" on an account other than their official ones.
